Mauritius Expedition

Swim with whales and turtles, find an uninhabited island and sample local street food
20 - 27 January
27 February - 5 March
22 - 29 April
Mauritius is the real Africa, as tranquil as Europe and not as hot as Thailand or the Seychelles. And we can’t wait to show it to you sooner rather than later.
We had the unique opportunity to explore this huge volcanic island by sail, swim with whales and try a bunch of unusual dishes that the local street food is famous for.

SPERM WHALES
AT ARM’S LENGTH

Mauritius is the ultimate snorkelling and whale watching destination. We’re sure to see sperm whales (there are around 50 living here) and there’s a good chance we’ll see humpback whales with calves, grindi (those black dolphins) and spinner dolphins leaping out of the water.
Best of all, in Mauritius you can not only see whales, you can swim with them. And to make sure you never forget this incredible experience, we’ve arranged for a cameraman to film your swim (yes, it’s all included in the adventure).

Unique cuisine at the crossroads of Chinese, Indian and European cuisine

We'll visit Port Louis to sample Mauritius' famous street food, taste all the tropical fruits, pop into Chinatown for traditional Chinese dishes and find the best coconut sweets and dol puri flatbreads: with curries, sweet spices or savoury sauces.

THE MOST THOUGHTFUL AND VARIED ITINERARY POSSIBLE

The final route will depend on the weather
It is always worth remembering that the weather at sea is unpredictable: calm and clear skies can turn stormy in a matter of hours. It is the captain’s primary responsibility to monitor the weather and assess the risks. Therefore, please understand that if the risk is high, the skipper has the right to change the route or not sail at all until the weather improves.
For this adventure, we have chosen dates when the weather is statistically best for sailing. We’ll be sailing along the west coast, sheltered from the swell, and anchoring off sheltered islands. And, of course, we’ll be exploring a number of interesting places inaccessible to walkers.

We board the boat at La Balise Black River Marina at 13:00 and head straight out to snorkel the reef at La Prenaise. We’ll swim in a uniquely beautiful spot and even swim up to the reef from the sea side. We will then anchor near Tamaren beach with its many bars. We’ll also spend the night there.
Day 1: La Balise Black River, Tamarene
4/8
Dedicate the day to snorkelling around Mont Choisy and the uninhabited island of Quen de Mire. We will try to find octopus and cuttlefish, seahorses, moray eels, fugu, butterfly fish, parrots and clowns in the open sea. Overnight at anchor.
Day 4. Cuen de Mire Island, coral reef
5/8
After breakfast, we will head to Round Island to explore the underwater world. We will have the opportunity to visit the shores of a nature reserve that is home to at least half of the endemic species of Mauritius. After lunch off the island, we head to Grand Baie Bay, officially the best beach in Mauritius. Here you can dine by boat or in the famous beach restaurant.
Day 5. Gran Baie Cove and the island’s best beach
3/8
This day we head to Port Louis where we will be taken on a tour of local street food. We will sample a mix of five cuisines (French, English, African, Indian and Chinese) in bustling markets, narrow streets or central squares. We’ll then head to Mont Choisy for a car park with one of the best views: a beautiful sunset, a vibrant flowering reef and turquoise waters.
Day 3. Port Louis and local food
6/8
After breakfast, we unload on the beach and spend most of the day on shore. We visit the Laburdone Estate and the famous Sivusagur Ramgoolam Botanical Gardens. Lunch will be taken at Chez Tante Athalie restaurant, after which we will return to the catamaran, rest and proceed to another famous beach — "Kasita", which is protected by a reef no less lush than all the previous ones.
Day 6. Botanical Gardens and Colonial Estate
2/8
Early in the morning we set off by boat for a whale watching and snorkelling trip. We will swim with sperm whales and if we are lucky, spinner dolphins or humpback whales. We’ll then head to Falaise Albion for lunch and a swim at the waterfall. We’ll then return to the catamaran, set the sails and head out to our final anchorage for the day, Turtle Bay, where sea turtles often come to feed. You can swim with them in the morning.
Day 2. Wailwatch and Turtle Cove
7/8
We will swim, have breakfast and set sail. We will sail almost all the way back to Benitier, an uninhabited island hidden in a huge coral reef. There we’ll enjoy a final dinner on land, a campfire and the glow of the Milky Way.
Day 7. Benitier Island
8/8
After breakfast we return to the home marina. We have to leave the boat at 9am, after which we say goodbye and have a coffee in one of the pleasant restaurants of the La Balise marina.
Day 8. La Balise Black River, Tamaren

We’re often asked

Questions department:
Sounds great. Is it OK if I have no sailing experience?
Answer Department:
Of course you can. We always welcome newcomers, we want to attract new people to sailing and we will teach you everything if you want.
Questions department:
Do you get seasick on the boat?
Answer Department:
Statistically 90% of people are prone to motion sickness. However, we will only sail in calm waters and will not go out to sea during a storm. Slight rocking is normally tolerated by most people, and taking anti-motion sickness tablets removes the unpleasant sensations completely. In addition, after 2−3 days the organism adjusts, "pumps up" and pills are no longer needed.
Questions department:
Where will I sleep? On the boat or in hotels?
Answer Department:
We live on a catamaran. It has comfortable double cabins with a bunk bed. In addition, each cabin has a small wardrobe for storing clothes and closed niches for bags.
Questions department:
What do we eat?
Answer Department:
For all November arrivals, we have decided to add even more comfort to the adventure, so there will be a cook on board. When you wake up, breakfast will be waiting for you. When you return from an active snorkelling trip, dinner is ready. We believe that this is a great way to get to know the local cuisine and immerse yourself in the culture of the country. You’ll also have more time to explore new places and relax. On adventures from December to February we cook our own meals. The boat has a galley, gas cooker, fridge and all the necessary utensils. On the first day we do the shopping together, based on the wishes of all team members.
Questions department:
Will I be allowed to sail the boat?
Answer Department:
Yes, and we welcome it. You will be accompanied by a professional skipper who will teach you the basics of sailing and you will be able to take an active part in the management of the catamaran: setting and managing the sails, steering and assisting with mooring.
Questions department:
What if I just want to relax and do nothing?
Answer Department:
You can rely on our captain and only join in the teamwork when you need it most, such as when mooring and setting sail. The rest of the time you can relax and enjoy the view.
Questions department:
How much time will I spend at sea? Will I have time to see the sights?
Answer Department:
When travelling we try to keep a balance between sea and land. The average crossing per day is 20 to 30 miles, which equates to 4 to 6 hours of sailing per day. We arrive at the anchorage in the afternoon and still have time for sightseeing.
Questions department:
What should I bring with me?
Answer Department:
Write to us and we will send you a detailed clothing memo for your water area.
Questions department:
How and where do I meet the team and the captain?

Answer Department:
Before each trip we organise a meeting (online) where we introduce each other and the captain, answer questions, discuss the programme and all the details. If you can’t make it, don’t worry, you can get to know each other in absentia and ask any questions in the team chat. We will then meet at the marina.
